Actor Russell Andrews announced his ALS diagnosis on-air during a May 16 appearance on CNN

Russell Andrews' fiancée is standing by his side amid his ALS diagnosis.
The actor — who is best known for his roles in Straight Outta Compton and Better Call Saul — is engaged to fellow actress Erica Tazel.
On May 16, Andrews appeared on CNN's The Story Is with Elex Michaelson and announced he had been diagnosed with the fatal neurodegenerative disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in the fall of 2025.
ALS, which has no cure, destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing muscle weakness, slurred speech and eventual paralysis, per the Mayo Clinic.
He made the announcement alongside Tazel, who reflected on Andrews' receiving the diagnosis after months of "subtle little things" signaling something was "definitely wrong."
"I was uncharacteristically calm and in a way, it was an answer to a lot of questions that we had," she said.

Tazel was born in Dallas. As she told Cliché Magazine in April 2014, she attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
She eventually left Dallas to attend Spelman College in Atlanta, before moving to New York to receive her master of fine arts degree from New York University, per New York Film Academy.

Much like Andrews, Tazel is an actress, best known for her roles in the TV series Justified and Roots.
During her 2014 conversation with Cliché Magazine, Tazel shared that she initially "had every intention" of going to medical school with a focus in physical therapy after her time at Spelman College. However, her plans changed after seeing a show that the theater and dance department had put on.
"It may sound crazy, but when I walked into the theater, I unexpectedly began to cry," she told the outlet. "I felt like I had come home. I knew in that very moment that I had to change courses."

Although Andrews and Tazel have not revealed how they met or when they began dating, the pair are engaged.
During their CNN appearance, Tazel said that the Insecure actor's ALS diagnosis did not change her hopes to marry him.
"[There] was not a sigh of relief, but some understanding of what was happening," she recalled of his diagnosis. "And I looked at him across the room and I said, ‘At least now we know what it is, and I still want to be your wife.' "
She will be his caregiver amid his ALS diagnosis
CNN reported that Tazel will also be taking on the role of Andrews' caregiver.
When asked what Andrews' ALS journey has taught her about love, Tazel responded, "That there are cases where it is truly unconditional."
