Tom Hanks reflects on voicing Woody for over 30 years and calls Toy Story 5 a "vibrant" new chapter

The new movie introduces Lilypad, a high-tech toy voiced by Greta Lee, challenging the Toy Story gang's roles

Toy Story 5 features new characters voiced by Conan O'Brien, Craig Robinson, Shelby Rabara, and more, debuting June 19

Tom Hanks has voiced Woody the sheriff in the Toy Story franchise for more than 30 years. He's as surprised as anyone that he and his costars remain at the center of Pixar's flagship animated series.

"Oh my Lord, all I can say is the saga continues," Hanks, 69, tells PEOPLE of Toy Story 5 on Monday, May 18, at the opening night of Celebrity Autobiography on Broadway in New York City. Hanks' wife Rita Wilsonstars in and co-produces the new show, which features an ever-changing lineup of entertainment, politicians and athletes who read and act out excerpts from other celebrities' autobiographies.

Hanks, meanwhile, stepped back into the voice acting booth alongside longtime Toy Story costars like Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn and more for the upcoming film.

"I have seen it. I don't know how they do it, but it is a vibrant and proper chapter in the Toy Story canon," he adds. "None of us can believe that we're still a part of it."

"The toys are back and this time, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang's jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie," reads an official synopsis for Toy Story 5. "Will playtime ever be the same?"

Conan O'Brien also joins Toy Story 5's cast as a "toilet-training tech toy Smarty Pants," while Tony Hale returns as Forky, who was introduced in 2019's Toy Story 4. New characters also include Craig Robinson's GPS hippo Atlas, Shelby Rabara as camera toy Snappy, Scarlett Spears as Bonnie, Mykal-Michelle Haris as Blaze, and Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase.

Toy Story 5 is in theaters June 19, while Celebrity Autobiography is running on Broadway through Aug. 9.
