Scarlett Johansson‘s next movie is an interesting blend of neo-noir and sci-fi. Brad Bird, its director, recently spoke about the projects that influenced him as he developed the feature over the last three decades.

Bird, who previously helmed The Incredibles and Ratatouille, discussed his upcoming Netflix film Ray Gunn during an interview with ScreenRant at the San Diego Comic-Con. The filmmaker broke down the inspirations behind the undertaking, explaining how the genre of noir has a much bigger scope than people think. “I think that people describe it as noir, and it’s like, ‘Okay, it’s noir,’ but there’s more comedy in it than most noir, and there’s more action in it than most noir,” Bird said, effectively hinting that he hasn’t limited Ray Gunn to any particular genre.
Notably, Bird penned the screenplay of the animated film with Matthew Robbins. Johansson provides the voice of Venus Nova, a beleaguered pop star dealing with a major scandal. Meanwhile, Sam Rockwell voices the eponymous Raymond “Ray” Gunn, a private detective.

In the above interview, Bird went on to point out that noir as a genre can be very diverse. “You can talk about The Maltese Falcon and Chinatown and these great movies, but there are also things like The Big Lebowski, which is also noir,” he said. “I mean, it’s goofy noir, but it is noir, and so you start to realize that noir can take a variety of shapes. You think of dark nights and alleyways and stuff like that, but Chinatown is noir in the sunlight and it’s just as noir as anything else.”
According to the log line, Ray Gunn takes place in an alternate future in the city of Metropia, and follows the titular hero as he takes on a dangerous case involving aliens, murder, and Nova. That and various promotional material released for the movie, including an image of a hologram of Nova, draw a compelling comparison between Ray Gunn and Blade Runner.
