Ryan Gosling has reportedly been cast as Marvel's demonic superhero, Ghost Rider, a move that has pleased social media users.

On July 25, San Diego Comic-Con, the comic book convention and multi-genre entertainment event, continues to be held annually at the San Diego Convention Center in California. Marvel is expected to deliver a new take on their best-selling comic book featuring the Spirit of Vengeance, also known as Ghost Rider. The brimstone biker was previously played by Nicolas Cage back in 2007.

Gosling has reportedly signed on to the Marvel project. This came after the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer showed no signs of "any good story to tell."

Ahead of Marvel's Hall H presentation at SDCC, Gosling has been "officially cast as Ghost Rider in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe]," according to Comic Book Movie.

During the Hall H presentation, Marvel Studios exec Kevin Feige announced Gosling onstage and mentioned their movie would be a standalone.

The film will be directed by Stranger Things director Shawn Levy and is slated to release in 2028, according to Variety.

Comic book fans jumped to social media and cheered over the casting news. One person said, “Please be true. I'm tired of being baited.”

“Ryan Gosling playing Ghost Rider? Please, I need this!" another person added. A third wrote, “Oh, please let this be true.”

Despite the support from fans, Gosling had a critic who shared, "Doesn't this guy have a real career and shouldn't be doing a stupid Marvel movie? This guy was in Drive!"

In April 2025, Gosling was announced as the leading man in the new film from the team behind Star Wars.

Directed by Levy as well, the film is based on the screenplay by Jonathan Tropper. Tropper's story is set approximately five or six years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

Meanwhile, on March 29, Gosling shared a rare glimpse into his personal life.

The actor credited one of his daughters for helping shape the look of his character, Ryland Grace, the 8th-grade science teacher in his sci-fi movie, Project Hail Mary, which is adapted from Andy Weir's bestselling novel.

To save the dying planet, the government reluctantly dispatches Ryland to a star system 11.9 light-years from Earth.

"I was playing around with the character and trying to put on stuff, and I put on glasses as a joke, almost, because it felt cliched to wear glasses to play a scientist.

"My daughter came by, and she was like, 'You look smarter in glasses.' And I was like 'Well, then, I'll wear them'."

Gosling and his wife Eva Mendes, 52, share their two daughters, Esmeralda and Amanda.
