Rumer Willis, Bruce Willis' eldest daughter, shared one positive aspect of her father's devastating battle with dementia. The 37-year-old actress revealed that she has experienced a different side of him that she hadn't seen before.

"I'm so grateful I get to go see him," she told The Inside Edit. "Even though it's different now, I'm so grateful." Rumer welcomed her daughter, Louetta, in 2023, making Bruce a grandfather.

"He's always been this kind of macho dude and there's like a — fragile is not the right word, but — just a tenderness that maybe being Bruce Willis might not have allowed him in a certain way," she said candidly. Willis, 71, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in early 2023.

Frontotemporal dementia affects areas of the brain responsible for personality, language, and behavior. It differs from Alzheimer's because memory loss is not always the earliest symptom instead patients first experience personality and impulse control changes.

Rumer also revealed that she had "no idea" how prevalent the progressive neurological disease was until her father was diagnosed. "It's wild to me," Rumer said. "So many people come up to me now and they say, 'My uncle had FTD. My dad had this.'"

Then, in February 2023, it was announced that his aphasia had progressed to a more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, a brain disorder that affects language, movement, and behavior.

Alongside caring for Bruce, his wife Emma has been raising awareness of FTD and dementia as a whole, helping to provide awareness and support for families going through the same terrible experience.

Earlier this year, Emma honored her husband on his birthday, writing in a caption on Instagram, "This journey with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) has opened my eyes to the realities so many families face. It's what inspired me to create The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund to raise awareness of FTD, support research, and stand beside the caregivers who carry so much every day."

"If you'd like to honor Bruce today, please consider supporting the fund or another organization working in this space, or simply checking in on a caregiver - a small act of kindness that can mean so much. [blue heart emoji]," the caption continued.

Bruce Willis shares daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 32, with his ex-wife Demi Moore, and has two daughters, Mabel, 14 and Evelyn, 12, from his current marriage to Emma Heming Willis.

When Willis was first diagnosed, the family explained feeling a sense of relief about finally being able to understand what was happening.

"While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis," his family wrote at the time.
