Did we all realize how Art Deco–coded The Great Gatsby is when we read it in high school? It’s 1922, just three years before the international fair that would give the design movement its name. The men are home from the Great War. Gatsby’s mansion has the sleek surface and audacity of the era, and he himself is the embodiment of the belief in the possible. The Valley of Ashes shows the marks of the rise and ruin of industry. And the New York metropolis is alive with, as Nick says, “the constant flicker of men and women and machines.” And then there is the scene where we meet Daisy and Jordan floating in the middle of the room on a sofa dressed in white. Can’t you just tell they’re wearing good jewelry?

Ralph Lauren designed the menswear for the 1974 movie version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic, and, should anyone attempt another cinematic adaptation, Lauren now has the jewelry ready for the women, too. Those white dresses “rippling and fluttering as if [Daisy and Jordan] had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house” could use a black enamel and diamond bangle to ground them.

A new collection of Ralph Lauren fine jewelry has an Art Deco chapter, with pieces—including bangles, earrings, and a necklace—designed with the graphic palette and patterns that are the style’s signature. They are described as a “testament to the era’s intrigue and glamour; each captures the spirit of champagne-filled celebrations and the allure of night.”

The jewelry—the first fine jewelry collection from the brand in several years—was presented to editors at the Ralph Lauren Palazzo in Milan alongside the spring 2026 collection, which happened to include several white evening gowns that seemed made for Daisy Buchanan.

The years between the wars that we call Art Deco fostered a daring approach in all aspects of design—and the jewelry created during the period is recognizable by its straight lines and the use of novel materials, including onyx, colored enamel, jade, lapis, and coral. The strict geometry was a radical departure from the romantic sweeps and garlands of the Belle Epoque. This was a new age, and the promise of modernity was in the air.

Women had embraced the opportunities the war had provided them. They ditched their corsets and their fashion coverings. They cut their hair and rouged their lips and bared their arms. These shifts in fashion created trends in jewelry. The lightness of fabric made heavy pins impossible; short hair required long, dangling earrings; and the exposed wrists were in need of bracelets—stacks of them, in fact. So buy more than one.
