The BBC has announced that Naga Munchetty will be leaving BBC Breakfast after 17 years on the show.
Munchetty, who first joined BBC Breakfast as a stand-in presenter back in 2009, will be heading to BBC Radio 5 Live, where she will present its flagship morning programme from January 2027. The move follows a series of personnel and schedule changes on the show, with weekend host Rachel Burden announcing earlier this month that she would also be leaving the programme.
In a statement, Munchetty said that sheās āthrilledā to be joining 5 Live Breakfast. āLive news, great conversations and connecting with audiences are what I love most about broadcasting, and 5 Live does all of that brilliantly,ā she said.
āIt has been a privilege to be part of the BBC Breakfast TV team for the past 17 years, working alongside an incredibly talented and hard-working group of journalists who are not only outstanding colleagues but also great friends. Presenting a flagship programme on 5 Live is an opportunity that was simply too good to pass up. It will take a huge amount of work and require 100% of my focus and energy, and I'm really looking forward to throwing myself into the role.ā
Having presented the stationās weekday mid-morning programme since 2021, Munchetty added that sheās āexcited to buildā on her existing relationship with listeners. āBetween now and January, I'll continue presenting the two programmes I love,ā she said. āI'm sure there will be plenty of news to cover, and it will very much be business as usual."

As for the current hosts of 5Live Breakfast, Rick Edwards and Burden announced on Tuesday (28 July) that they would be stepping down from the show in December. Instead, Burden will host the weekday mid-morning programme, while Edwards continues to present Fighting Talk, which airs on the station on Saturday mornings.
āAfter 15 years hosting 5 Live Breakfast, Iāve decided itās time for a change - and Iām really excited about launching my new show on the station,ā Burden said. āItās been an absolute joy and privilege to be part of our listenersā mornings for all these years. We have been through life-changing events together ā from the pandemic to huge political moments, and great sporting journeys.
"They are my extended family, and weāll carry on doing what we do best ā telling stories, sharing experiences and working out the world together. Just this time, on a little bit more sleep.ā
While Edwards added that his five years on the show look āinconsequentialā next to Burdenās 15. āIāll really miss our wonderful audience, Iāll miss the fantastic team, Iāll miss regularly eating cake before dawn, but most of all Iāll miss Rach ā a colleague who has become a friend, and also a mentor, because sheās so much older than me,ā he added. āTwo things I am of course looking forward to are not waking up at 3.45am, and vaping without fear of violent recrimination.
Munchetty is set to broadcast live from Salford for three days a week, while the remaining two will be from London. Sheāll also be joined by a new co-host on 5 Live Breakfast, who will be announced later in the year.
More to follow.
