Mark Ballas and BC Jean are opening up about how they navigate their relationship after nine years of marriage.
The couple spoke exclusively with PEOPLE at Spotify’s Best New Artist Party in Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 29, ahead of the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 1.
As the couple prepares for Valentine's Day, they share how their relationship has evolved over the years. Jean, 38, explains that her love language has changed with time, noting, "Mine used to be physical touch, and it still probably is still up there."
But she said she recently retook the test and learned her key love language is acts of service. "I think it's like, becoming a mom, it's nice when someone takes the trash out, and when he does that," Jean said of her husband, whom she shares 2-year-old son, Banksi Wylde.

Ballas, 39, added that, like Jean, physical touch is one of his love languages, as well as words of affirmation. "I think you know those are mine," he said to Jean.
Ballas acknowledged that since they've "celebrated many Valentine's Days together," things are different "now that [they're] parents." He added, "I think it's an excuse to get a sitter and go and treat ourselves."
The couple first met at a mutual friend's house during an artist's gathering. "It was kind of like a fun party night where singers and musicians would get up and perform," Jean told Riff magazine in March 2022.
There, Ballas was impressed by Jean's singing. "He couldn't see me; he could only hear me," she told the outlet. "And I think he liked what he heard."
Ballas added, "Right when I got there, the whole room was just watching this girl on stage, and she was killing it. Her voice gave me the feels of a Janis Joplin. I was just blown away."
It was after the event that the pair exchanged numbers and eventually started dating in 2012. "We realized we had great chemistry both on and off the stage," Jean said.

Then, in November 2015, they got engaged, and they shared the happy news a few months later in January 2016. Jean and Ballas married that November. Seven years later, in November 2023, they welcomed their son.
Speaking to PEOPLE about their music together, BC Jean noted that she and Ballas are inspired by each other when creating new work.
"We're each other's muses," she said in July 2017. "For some people, spending that much time together doesn't work out well for them, but for Mark and I, we're a balancing act. When one's down, the other picks them up."
