Luke Bryan told PEOPLE that his goal as a father is to always "keep it real with the family and the boys"
"They want to go hang with Dad, go get in the woods or do stuff like that, and that keeps me grounded," he shared
Bryan and his wife, Caroline, share two sons: Bo, 17, and Tate, 15
Luke Bryan may be one of the biggest stars in country music, but when he's not selling out stadiums, he's just "dad" to his two sons, Bo, 17, and Tate, 15.
That's why the award-winning singer-songwriter, 49, told PEOPLE at the Nashville American Idol Season 9 press line that he is constantly toeing the line between being a "celebrity" and being a "good dad and a good friend."
Bryan consistently seeks "to keep it real with the family and the boys." As a result, he's a straight shooter about the lifestyle his family has become accustomed to over the years due to his work. "They've grown up in this lifestyle, so when I get off the road, they really don't care where Dad's been. They want to go hang with Dad, go get in the woods or do stuff like that, and that keeps me grounded," he shared.

He explained, "I just wake up, put my pants on and get to work. And growing up on a farm and [with] family, kind of have that working mentality. But what grounds me is my family, my boys. Going back home to the farm, and fishing, and hunting, and golfing and taking the family on all that stuff."

"With me, as long as I can have a balance of writing music and finding new music from songwriters in Nashville, as long as I can find music that excites me to perform for the rest of my life, and it excites me to present it to my fans and future fans. And as long as I feel like I can reinvent a little bit, I don't want to get out there on an island and do stuff that's just totally left-footed," Bryan explained.

He continued, "I want to keep pushing myself to be a better singer and a better musician and just make sure from here on out, the rest of my life, when I'm on stage, it's on my terms and I'm having fun. I don't want to be going to a photo shoot and complaining about it. I want to try to make sure I'm enjoying every aspect of my career because, thank God, that's the work I put in to get to this point, to just enjoy the back half of the career."
