Stephen King’s Carrie is returning to the small screen – and some fans are not happy.
Prime Video released a teaser trailer for its new Carrie series, which is helmed by modern horror icon Mike Flanagan. The show will star Summer Howell as the titular telekinetic teenager Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as Carrie’s abusive and hyper-religious mother, Margaret. However, Howell’s appearance left some fans of the book desiring more from the casting department.
“I’m always seated for anything Mike Flanagan, but man I was really hoping for a book accurate Carrie,” wrote one Reddit user in response to the trailer. This criticism comes after Prime Video faced backlash from Legally Blonde fans for its “cashgrab” prequel series, Elle.

“Carrie was fat in the Stephen King book. That's why they dropped pigs blood on her. Every adaptation ever is too coward to stay true to the source,” echoed another critic on X. The original text describes Carrie as a "chunky girl with pimples on her neck and back and buttocks." However, she has consistently been played by conventionally attractive, thin actresses.
Other users pointed out that the upcoming Prime series is one of several Carrie adaptations, with one post reading, “if you’re not gonna make an accurate adaptation and learn from the mistakes of the past ones then don’t make one at all.”

Carrie, King’s debut novel, was released in 1974 and adapted into a now-classic horror film starring Sissy Spacek in 1976. A sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, came out in 1999. A made-for-television film of Carrie was released in 2002.

In 2013, Chloë Grace Moretz took on the role of Carrie for a remake of the 1974 movie.
King’s book has also been taken to the stage, first in a 1998 Broadway musical and then in 2012 for an off-Broadway revival. Flanagan's television show is set to release on October 7, 2026, on Prime Video.
“It was a short book with a simple story. Does it need a series?” remarked one X user. “Is this a third or fourth remake? Better question is… who cares,” asked one skeptical viewer of the teaser.

The primary criticism of the show's trailer continued to be Carrie’s appearance.
“I wonder if we’ll ever see a carrie who is considered fat and unattractive by society’s standards, rather than someone who still fits the conventional beauty ideal,” questioned one Reddit user.
“4th Carrie movie and still not a single plus size one even though her weight is the main thing she’s bullied for… right,” wrote another on X.
“There is genuinely no point for there to be yet ANOTHER Carrie movie if they can't even get it right and make her OVERWEIGHT,” reads one post, punctuated with a face-palming emoji.
