Celebrity hairstylist and recent New York Times best-selling author Chris Appleton says being a dad helps keep him young.
Chris, 42, and his daughter, Kitty-Blu (Kitty) Appleton, 21, caught up with PEOPLE exclusively at Spotify’s Best New Artist Party in Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 29. During the conversation, the hair maestro — who styles Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande — shared that Kitty helps keep him in touch with the latest trends.
“I always ask Kitty. I'm like, ‘Kitty, what is, is this cool? Shall I do this, shall I do this?’ ” the dad of two said.
“She just, like, advises me [on] what to do and where to go. And that's the great thing about having kids … they keep you young,” Chris added.

While at the Spotify event, Chris also spoke to PEOPLE about the success of his new book, Your Roots Don’t Define You, which debuted on Jan. 20. The book, part memoir and part self-help, delves into his experience coming out to his family while also providing concrete tips for moving through hardship and starting over.
Chris revealed that writing a best-selling book feels even more meaningful given the fact that he had a learning disability as a child.

“I think for me it was, you know, at school I was kind of dyslexic so it was hard to maybe be understood,” he said. “So to be a New York Times best seller just really feels like a full circle moment,” he said.
“But more than anything, I'm just glad it helped people … people seem to really gravitate toward my coming out story. Obviously, there's so much in the press with [the show] Heated Rivalry right now, and I think it's really refreshing to see different coming out stories, you know, in the sports world, and this was my experience, and it's really nice to see it helps people,” he explained.

“People have stopped me and said, you know, like, ‘You've enabled me to feel like I can do [come out],’ and that to me is the most special thing, ‘cause it wasn't something I had when I was a kid,” he added.

Chris has previously spoken out about the fear and anxiety he had surrounding coming out to his children when he was 26, admitting that he worried that "it would be better for them to have a dad that was dead than a dad that was gay,” while appearing on the On Purpose podcast in August.
“I felt like it was like a cancer. I wanted to clear it out of me,” he said.
The star went on to say that today, he is now in a "good place," and maintains a strong bond with both of his kids.
